This year’s festival motto, “We Exist Together,” permeates the entire program. Nevertheless, we found it important to include films that directly explore the questions of co-existence, empathy, collaboration, and collective responsibility. What is it like to grow up in a village of peace, where Palestinians and Jews intentionally live together? To teach, as a Bosnian mother in the Netherlands, one’s children patriotism and acceptance in the shadow of growing right-wing politics? To accept, as the child of sex workers, your parents? To stand firm, as a gay person, in the exclusionary American education system of the 1970s, or to challenge one of the world’s largest companies, Amazon, today? This section, full of humor and irony, portrays the tensions and traumas present in society sensitively and authentically—with the personal touch and human tone characteristic of Verzió.
