Besides the numerous conflicts around the world, Iraq can easily be forgotten; yet, 10 years after the fall of Saddam Hussein and 5 years after ISIS, the country remains in ruins. Films made in three Iraqi cities, Sinjar, Baghdad, and Mosul, present people’s attempts to build a new life after the war. Surviving the prisons of ISIS, a young Yazidi struggles with the difficulties of reintegration, as he is ostracized by his own community. In Baghdad, two young adults fight for freedom and acceptance; Milo wanders the city dressed in men’s clothes, while Khalili brings the chaos of the 2019 October Revolution close to his viewers using his camera, until a soldier shoots it out of his hands. The Lions by the River Tigris evokes both the destroyed city of Mosul and the hope of its rebirth, constructing new stories from stone dust and memories.
