Roma Image
What does it mean to portray Roma people and communities responsibly and with nuance? Who gets to tell a community’s story, and who decides how we see them? This section explores the cinematic representation of Roma people through the lens of self-representation, with particular attention to what happens when the camera does not simply look at a community from the outside, but its members also take an active role in shaping the image created of them. The section brings together documentaries that do not seek to present a single “Roma experience,” but instead ask how people portrayed on screen can become active authors of their own stories.
