The largest fertility clinic in Anand, north-west India, welcomes women who have chosen to carry someone else's child. The payment that surrogate mothers receive is not great, but for women from poor backgrounds it is a vital source of income – enough to ensure a home, food or education for their own children. At the same time, they are often stigmatized by their neighbors for their decision to become a surrogate mother. The film follows six women through different stages of surrogacy. It explores the women’s hopes, joys and conflicts they experience while living together, as well as the inevitable moment of having to give up the newborn child. By giving a voice to those who often remain unheard, A Mother’s Dream poses important questions about the ethical dimension of trafficking human happiness.
