89mm
89mm from Europe

89 mm od Europy / Marcel Lozinski / Poland / 1993 / 12 min

The railway station at Brest-Litovsk marks the point where standard European rail tracks terminate. Before a train can move on from Poland to Belorussia, the wheels of each of the carriages have to be adjusted to meet the conditions of a wider gauge: a difference of only 89 mm, yet symbolic of the huge transformation. While the changes are being made, train passengers from France and Germany, Holland and Poland watch the ceremony quietly. This daily routine work appears to the viewer as a telling metaphor of the transition. Are these really two different worlds?
